Peer Smed "One of a Kind" Copper Fireplace Hood

Incredible hand wrought copper Fireplace Hood by Peer Smed, signed and dated 1919. Very few of his bronze or copper works ever appear on the market as they were installations for custom homes and buildings.

A number of his works are in museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Most of Smed’s works that come to market are sterling silver and dated in the 1930's and rarely do you see pieces he made of any large scale and dating earlier than 1930. Upon further research, we discovered Peer Smed had a workshop in Long Island City before he moved to his Brooklyn Studio around 1930.

Provenance: The hood was commissioned for an important New York estate in Mill Neck, NY in 1914. Mill Neck is a small village in Oyster Bay part of an enclave known as the "gold coast”. This estate was owned by a prominent New York family.

The home was sold in the late 1940's. The new owners were executing a renovation to the whole house and the Smed Fireplace Hood was going to be demolished. It was recovered and remained in storage until we acquired it.
