Edward Farmer Large Sterling Silver and Hardstone Table Box
An absolutely wonderful example of Farmer’s work. Maintaining a gallery in New York starting in 1913 he was known for procuring and incorporating jade and hardstones from the Orient into silver objects and lamps. Many examples of his work can be seen at William Randolf Hearst Castle “San Simeon. He was an active decorator and antiques dealer until his death in 1942.
This box is of good size, having a hinged lid inset with a pierced green jade plaque that is backed with removable glass. The interior is fitted in wood with a divider. The stepped body with Chinese key bright cut engraving and fixed handles rests on four round carnelian feet. The Jade carving is set with a glass back, allowing one to remove the Jade for periodic cleaning.
